Dear Michael, I am so glad to have come across your website! My name is Rosa Martinez. I’m a graduate student at UC Berkeley and in the Ph.D. program in the English department. Well, I was in the Bancroft Library reading through the Craft-Trotter papers ( for my dissertation work) and in Ellen Craft Dammond’s files & letters she talks about the “Northern Star” musical. I even read through the script, which mentions the songs performed in the play but no lyrics. And there is a beautiful letter written to Juliette McGinnis-Nelson about how lovely the performance was.

Would it be possible for me to listen to the songs from that performance? Would you be interested in making a CD for the Bancroft Library to keep in its collection? I would really like to talk to you more about this. My work, actually, is on the William and Ellen craft escape (it’s the first chapter of my dissertation and I’m discussing racial passing and masquerade in American literature so I include other authors such as Mark Twain and James Weldon Johnson). I don’t now know how the musical will find its way into my chapter, or if it will but I plan to discuss another musical in a later chapter.

You are welcome to email me at rosam@berkeley.edu or even call me 510 712-0003.

    Best wishes,

    Rosa Martinez

Rosa – I am amazed that you found my blog entry, since after posting my first two entries I never blogged again. You have inspired me to blog some more!

We will be in touch about the William and Ellen Craft escape, and I wish you all success in your dissertation work –
